The Gravestone Now on the Site
The records of the gravesites at
the Makefield Quaker Graveyard are not very clear. There are two death
notices that state that my grandmother is buried there. I know that my
grandfather died several years earlier and was buried in Milwaukee. It
would then make sense that my grandmother was buried next to my
great-grandfather where there appeared to be an empty space. I talked
to the caretaker of the graveyard and she agreed with me. She then
placed a wooden marker for me, so that I could have a stone marker
placed there. After ordering the stone, I became concerned as to
whether anyone was buried there at all. If I could prove that there was
a grave, it would most likely be my grandmother. I had heard that
dowser’s can detect gravesites, but my experience on old grave sites was
that nothing could be detected. I decided to go to the graveyard and
give it a try. I found that I could detect the four sides of this
particular gravesite. By now I was able to detect intensity on the many
scans that I had done over the years. I then scanned my
great-grandfathers grave where he had been buried fifty years earlier,
and found weak lines. Those of my great-grandmother were even weaker as
she had died earlier. One of the sides of her gravesite hardly
registered at all. I then went around the graveyard and scanned
gravesites of those buried at various times. I found that as time went
on the lines faded. Those buried the same year seemed to show the same
strength. Some of the very old gravesites did not register at all.
There is now a marker placed on my grandmother’s grave (see above). I
now know that I can detect graves that are up to 100 years old without
much difficulty.
